How to Add a Picture in WordPress?

After you have written out a blog post you might want to add an image to make your article more visually appealing for your readers.

So how do you add a picture in WordPress?

As part of my WordPress basics series, I have created this short video below where I will walk you through this simple process:

As you can see it is a very simple process.

Below I will outline the steps again.

Step 1 – Add Media

Once you have written out your post and picked out where you want your image to go, click Add media > Upload Files > Select files and select which image you want to upload.

If you already have an image in your library you can choose one from there.

Next, you add in your Keywords, align your picture to the left, right or in the middle, take a link out or add one in, choose the size, and then…

  1. Hello friend and thanks for sharing this training is so awesome and well detailed. I believe that it is so great when you can add pictures because it helps bring what you are writing about to life and your readers can really connect with what you are saying as you reach out to them. Pictures are great to give your readers a better understanding of what you are talking about, besides making you blogs more appealing.

  2. This is a very helpful post for those who does not know how to add a picture in a WordPress post. The best thing is that you mix a video and text, you meat more user needs that way. I prefer to read instructions and are not much for watching videos, many people are the other way around. Great and instructive post, thank you:)

    • Thanks Linda!

Yes, people learn differently and some like watching video while others prefer reading… personally I like both 🙂

      Thanks for commenting 🙂

  3. Hi John,

Just a question about the keywords you put in. Can see on the picture that you are using the title and the Alt text. Do you ever use the description and what is that meant for? Does it make a difference in relation to SEO?

Also the title has – in between the words. Is that necessary or what is the reason for that?

    Thanks,
    Mikael

  4. Wonderful training, thanks. I hope you will do some more advanced picture uploading too. I have been having issues with uploading pictures the past few days. Whenever I want to use a picture I took with my phone, I get an HTTP error. Would appreciate your thoughts on that.
    Enjoy your day!

    • Thanks, Elmien!
I have been getting the same error as you a lot lately and I believe that there is a bug in the latest update of WordPress.
Unfortunately, it does happen from time to time.
Wealthy Affiliate are aware of this and they are looking into it, but worst case scenario, I am sure it will be fixed in the next update 🙂

  5. Hi John,

Thank you so much for your post, it is very useful.

I always have a problem with the images size, because if they are too big, they slow down the website, right?
Do you suggest any size for the images?
Or do you know any program to reduce the size of images without losing quality?

Thank you so much for your help!

    Cheers
    Alex

    • Thanks Alex, I am glad you liked the training 🙂

Generally, I like my images to be mid sized… sometimes I play around with the size if it doesn’t look right.

Images definitely can slow your site down a fair bit.

I have heard of a plugin called W3 total cache and that it works well.

I haven’t installed it yet, but I will let you know how it works out!

      Cheers 🙂
