How to create a balanced life

How to create a balanced life?

With all of the obligations and demands in our lives these days, it is so hard to know how to create a balanced life.

From work dramas, money issues, family problems, to our health and fitness levels, and constant requests from friends and community obligations, there are constant demands on our time and money, all day, every day.

What if we want to start a business or have a change of career?

What if we want to move, travel or make a life change, but there is so much “to do”?

It is no wonder that many of us are feeling stuck, overwhelmed, and that our lives are just “out of whack”.

How can we possibly get our lives back into balance?

how to create a balanced life

What do we actually want?

The very first thing we should do if we want to get some balance back into our lives, is to take a step back and work out what it is that we actually want.

Most of us don’t know what we actually do want.

We are just caught up in life.

Going to work, paying the bills, running the kids around, watching television, and reacting to problems that come up and the demands of other people.

Unless we actively begin to create our OWN lives, we are really just being run by the whims of other people.

So the first step is to take some time, sit down, and work out what we actually want in life and set some goals.

If we don’t have a direction that we want to head in, then we just end up running around like headless chickens, not going anywhere – completely out of balance.

Another analogy I like, is that you don’t want to climb the ladder of success, only to get to the top and discover that it was leaning against the wrong wall!

You have to design your OWN life!

I personally set goals in the what I consider to be the big three areas of life, and if you get these areas into balance, then your life gets into balance.

I am of course referring to the BIG 3:

  1. Your Health
  2. Your Wealth
  3. And your Relationships

It all comes down to the BIG 3!

Health

The first thing we all need to get into balance, is our health.

It is so easy to neglect our health as we get older and put it on the back burner.

But there is no point in being the richest man in the grave yard.

If we don’t have our health then we have nothing.

Under the health category we can first look at the area of our fitness.

Regular exercise is important.

I like to do aerobic exercise such as running, Tae-bo, using my treadmill, as well as other exercises such as yoga and weight training.

What other exercises or activities could you do?

What about sport?

I also like to play cricket in summer and golf in winter.

Your mental health is also important, so having some sort of activity that you enjoy is a good outlet.

Meditation is also a good practice you may want to consider for your mental health and well being.

So work out some health and fitness goals and schedule it in.

What you schedule in, gets done!

Wealth

I always shake my head when people say that money is not important.

Even my Mother will often say that “I would rather have my health than money”

But what if you said your wife or husband was not important?

Do you think you would be married for much longer?

They wouldn’t hang around for long and neither would money!

It’s not a one thing or another scenario.

It is all about balance!

The truth is that money will only make you more of what you already are.

But what about Ken?

He came into all that money and he turned into a real prick!

NO!

Ken was a prick before, the money only amplified it! (Sorry to Ken, it could be anybody 😉 )

The money isn’t the problem, you are!

Money will only amplify the good and the bad.

The more money you have, the more good you can do for your family, your community, the world, and yourself.

Money makes the world go round, and if you don’t have any, life can be very tough.

So start to work out some money goals in the areas of income, net worth and business/career.

You only have one life and you deserve abundance in all areas, including money.

How to create balance in your life

Relationships

The third area that you need to get balance in your life is of course your relationships.

This is the area that if done right can bring so much happiness and fulfilment, but can also cause so much pain.

But often we don’t nurture our relationships with our significant other, take them for granted, and are shocked and hurt when things start to go wrong.

So start to set some relationship goals for your relationships, not only with your partner, but your children, family, friends and community.

What is also important is your relationship with yourself.

Growth is life, and if you are not learning, growing and taking some time for yourself, then you won’t really be happy or fulfilled.

This is why I am such a strong believer in personal development and working on your mindset.

When you can control your own mind then you can control your life.

Get back into balance

The truth is that you will probably never have your life totally in balance, it is all a juggling act to a certain extent.

But if you start to be aware, set some goals and give your attention to these three “big rocks” of life then you will start to know how to create balance in your life!

Either you run your life, or your life runs you!

  1. This is a great article and many people will benefit from reading this. I love how you mentioned the three most important things, health, wealth and relationships.

If your relationships are terrible or your health is bad you surely cannot live a fulfilling life, especially with no money. Although, these all need balancing, would you say a particular one of them is more important than the other?

    • It’s all a balance Josh, but if you don’t have your health you have nothing, and this is often the most overlooked of the three!

Glad you liked the article 🙂

  2. Hi John,
Great article! I feel inspired. I have been feeling like my life has been running me of late. I just cant get enough done in the day and I am constantly working. I feel all of the big 3 are out of balance right now. I will take your advice and begin to focus on my mindset.
    Thanks,
    Josh

    • Thanks for your comment Josh, glad that it has given you some inspiration.
It can be hard to maintain balance in all of the big 3, but at least if you are aware of it, you can take some action to rectify things!
      Thanks again 🙂

  3. This is oh so true, John. Life tends to get in the way and makes you feel overwhelmed. I went through all this. But, then WA came along and made things feel achievable. You hit the nail on the head about getting your life balanced. Unfortunately, it took me 62 years, but I finally feel there. Keep up the good information feed, John.

  4. Hey John I really love the content on your post, it is very important to have these things in our lives. It is a good idea to promote this type of ideas about a balanced life before engaging in this type of new venture. I think it is vital because it is easy to spend tons of time on it, and lose track of other very important things and relationships. Just a thought on one area, and that is in the area of the reddish or pinkish hue on the drop down menu. Someone like me that has trouble seeing without glasses will have trouble reading it. Great site!

    • Thanks for your comment Richard, glad you liked the post and the idea of having a balanced life!

I will have a look at the drop down menu as well and see if I can make it a bit easier to view 😉

  5. Hey there John,

Great looking article. Loved the big 3 rocks. they are indeed the most important things in life. regardless what anyone says. What kind of goals can we set relationship wise? what practices can we do to strengthen relationships? also, who is Ken? I guess I’m not up to date on that one.

    • Ha ha!! Ken is just an example, it could be anyone 😉

Seriously, you have asked some great questions, and relationship goals are the most difficult to set…and judge.

One thing I like to do, is to schedule time away for multiple nights with my wife every 3 months … WITHOUT the kids.

Also a weekly date night is good.

Especially when you have children, time together with your partner is essential.

If you don’t plan it and schedule it in, time get’s away so fast.

I also recommend reading “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” A MUST read 🙂

      Thanks for your comment!

  6. Dear John,

Thank you for your tips on having a balanced life. I really needed this reminder as I am a college student thinking about the big future ahead of me. I have found that health should be a huge concern, especially for students. When I didn’t have enough sleep and too much on my plate, I felt like my life was going by too fast and I wasn’t the one behind the wheel. It is very important to be reminded about the quality of life. This post is a great reminder for everyone, young and old. Thank you for this.

    • Thanks Grace, glad you liked it 🙂

You have great advantage in learning about personal development at such a young age.

I didn’t really consider these things until I was in my thirties, and in an essence it feels like playing catch up!

Start directing your own life now and never stop 🙂
