The Habits of The Rich Vs The Poor – Part 1
How the Rich Think Differently to Poor People
In his best selling book “Secrets of the Millionaire Mind” multi-millionaire businessman T. Harv Eker talks about the habits of the rich vs the poor, and how the mega-rich have a different way of thinking than that of the poor or middle class.
Eker goes on to explain that while he believes that in no way are the rich better than poor people, he believes that the number one reason that the rich are rich, is their mindset and the particular way that they think.
He believes… and I happen to agree with him, that it is your mindset that will help you to get rich, stay rich, and if you happen to lose all your money, will give you the ability to gain it all back again… and more!
Even though you may lose all your money, you can never lose your “Millionaire Mind”
The Millionaire Mind
Think about Donald Trump.
At one stage Trump was a millionaire and then lost all of his money and went bankrupt.
So did the Don pack up his toupee and get a job packing shelves at K-Mart?
No, Trump went and made all his money back and then some… He then became a “Billionaire”.
You see Donald Trump may of lost all his money, but he didn’t lose his way of thinking, or his “Millionaire Mind” (or in Trumps case billionaire mind)
On the other side of the coin think about all of the lotto winners that end up broke shortly afterwards.
This is all to do with your mindset and how you think about money and wealth.
Eker calls these wealth files.
So in this 3-part series of blog posts, I will give my view of these wealth files and the differences of the rich and poor mindset.
Your thoughts lead to your feelings, which lead to your actions, which lead to your results.
And if you want to get rich you need to think rich!
Wealth File #1
Rich people believe “I create my life”
Poor people believe “Life happens to me”
The most important belief you can have that will not only create wealth, but will also allow you to be totally in charge of your life, is the belief that you alone are responsible for your OWN life!
You are in charge!
You are at the steering wheel of your own life, no one else!
You are responsible!
Where as the poor believe there is always something, or someone else to blame.
They blame, complain and justify why it is not their fault and play the victim.
As Harv Eker says “There is no such thing as a really rich victim!”
Until you give up complaining, blaming, playing the victim, and start to take responsibility for your own life and wealth… you will NEVER be rich!
Wealth File #2
Rich people play the money game to win.
Poor people play the money game NOT to lose.
The biggest problem with poor people is that they want to be comfortable.
The trouble with the comfort zone is that you are not growing, and at the end of the day not very happy either.
The goal of rich people is to play the money game to win and to have massive wealth and abundance.
But if you are operating in the comfort zone, you are only operating on defence.
Becoming rich requires taking a chance and putting in some work.
Wealth File #3
Rich people are committed to being rich.
Poor people want to be rich.
Just about everybody wants to be rich, but are you committed?
Getting rich is no walk in the park.
It takes effort, hard work and a never give up attitude.
You have to be committed!
I have made the commitment to becoming rich!
I won’t give up when it becomes hard!
What about you?
Will you commit to being rich?
Wealth File #4
Rich people think big.
Poor people think small.
A famous quote from Donald Trump says “If you are going to think anyway, you may as well think big!”
Poor people play small.
Rich people play big.
The secret to wealth is “value”.
The more value that you give, the more wealth you make.
So THINK BIG!
Wealth File #5
Rich people focus on opportunities.
Poor people focus on obstacles.
On your own road to financial freedom there are going to be obstacles, setbacks, failures, problems, things that won’t work, people putting you down, etc, etc.
Rich people don’t see these as problems, but rather as opportunities to learn, grow and overcome.
I like to think of these roadblocks as challenges to overcome.
If you are going to become rich, accept problems as par for the course and never give up!
I will be back soon with Wealth file #6 and part-2 on The Habits of the Rich Vs The Poor!

Hi, John
These are some brilliant insights in to the habits of the rich vs the poor people! Everything you have mentioned here on what the rich people do really makes sense when you think about it because the rich do have a different mindset to the people who are stuck in jobs or who have no money.
At the end of the day, everyone has a choice in life to improve their lifestyle, but many people lack self belief and therefore don’t act upon their dreams and goals which is a shame.
Great post! Neil 🙂
Thanks so much Neil!
Hi there John,
It’s so true about the part people wanting to be rich. In fact, I caught up with some friends last week and everyone is complaining about the economy and their struggles with life.
If only they were rich (they wished), then they won’t have so much frustration. There you go – poor mentality. And why do I say that? Because this is the fifth year that they are saying the same thing over again.
It happens all the time Cathy!
Unfortunately nothing will change until we do AND start taking some action to change our circumstances.
For most people it is easier to complain about things than to do something about it!
Thanks for your feedback 🙂
Nice work John, I’m thinking bigger already!
Awesome Tony!
I am glad you liked it! 🙂
All points well made, especially our being at the steering wheel of our life. As a sailor, I prefer helm, but I get the idea 🙂
lol! Thanks Wolf.
At the helm it is!
I totally agree with you on having the proper mindset to succeed at anything…we are what we think 🙂
Absolutely Dee!
Thanks for your comment!
Great post here. I really enjoyed reading it. I agree that mindset is what drives us to success or failure. Success is a state of mind and if you set yourself for failure to will fail. Wealthy Affiliate is the place where you can see what you are really capable of because it requires time and patience to achieve your goal.
Success certainly is a state of mind Rufat!
I agree with you about Wealthy Affiliate as well, they have been awesome for me!
It is so true the differences in how rich and poor people both act and think. The great thing is though that everyone has the potential to act and think like a rich person which will in turn (with some hard work) lead to success.
Thanks for your feedback Theo!
It is so true what you say, with hard work and the right mindset, success is assured!
Interesting! I always believed money gets money. If you have some money = it is easier to get more. However, I will change my mindset and attempt to think big!
Having money can help you make more money Vanessa, but only if you have the right mindset!
Thanks for your comment and keep thinking BIG!!
Great article John! I couldn’t agree more with the points that you’ve made.
Thanks so much Kevin, I am glad you liked it!
You site look very professional. Very well put together. This should encourage anyone to be positive.
Thanks Jas!
Mindset is the key to success!
